Local Government ELA- when the GIS department is not enough

Across the board, we are seeing the use of GIS maturing into the enterprise space, with Local Governments leading the charge. Local Governments are realising that it is no longer good enough to just rely on the GIS department to answer their location questions. (more…)

Insurers on Call !!!

Hi All,

We all know as consumers of insurance, that insurers give us piece of mind and provide us with protection against damage which we may incur for any number of reasons, but especially events, including catastrophic events or natural disasters which we are very accustomed to here in Australia.

I am particularly moved by the distressing scenes we are currently seeing across the east coast of Australia, with the widespread flooding and the devastation and damage which these flood waters are causing to both residents and businesses in many areas of the country.  (more…)

Traffic Light Project Using ArcGIS to save Energy… and $1 Million per year

As someone who is all about reducing my ‘carbon footprint’, I was very inspired to hear about this energy-saving initiative taking place in the US.

In yet another innovative example of location intelligence being used to improve efficiencies, the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is using Esri’s ArcGIS software system to implement its LED Traffic Lights Project. The LED Traffic Lights Project is an ambitious traffic light replacement program which will track and manage the replacement of 87,000 incandescent lightbulbs with energy-saving light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs. GeoDesign Defined

I’m really passionate about GeoDesign because of my background in landscape architecture. There are so many similarities in landscape architecture and GeoDesign – in fact, during my university days, one of the greatest challenges was integrating GIS into the design curriculum. I think it is more standard to have GIS in the design curriculum  nowadays, but GIS is still not a standard tool used by designers.

On a personal level, something I’d like to see is how GIS can be better integrated with design workflows. I am especially interested in ideas and feedback from GIS users and designers on how GeoDesign can bring us a step closer to a more holistic design approach – so feel free to comment on this post and we can get a conversation going!

Anyway, let’s go back to the beginning and talk about what GeoDesign really means.  (more…)

Which is why I wanted to let you know that today, we have officially put out the Call for Papers! If you’ve had a great experience with location intelligence, or have a GIS that others should know about, then you should get involved! (more…)

A map that turkeys can be thankful for…

Tough times for turkeys! I love it when I find a good map that illustrates the magic of GIS on a very simple level, themed with a subject that captures our interest. That’s why this fun Esri map caught my eye.  (more…)
